Open trench or open cut is the simplest method of installing tracer wire and does not require the strength that would be necessary in directional drilling or pipe bursting applications. Several options are recommended including: Solid Copper, Flexible Copper Clad Steel (CSS) and High Strength Copper Clad Steel (CCS). Historically THHN has been used as a minimum requirement that meets the specification. We highly advise against this option as the nylon PVC coating deteriorates and will cause signal failures in the direct burial application.
